Since its emergence in the 16th century, this enclave has been the prototype of urban tree-lined avenues throughout Latin America by creating a natural environment inside urban centres for the leisure and recreation of citizens. This model, the first of its kind in all European capitals, was to be extended throughout the Iberian Peninsula and America as part of a wide range of town development projects from the 17th to the 19th century.
