Every year, on the second Friday of the month of October, this year October 13, World Botanical Gardens Day is celebrated. The objective of this day is to make citizens aware of what a botanical garden is and what differentiates it from a park or any other garden. The existence of a botanical garden is based on three fundamental pillars: scientific research, conservation of plants and their natural environment, and scientific dissemination.

The Royal Botanical Garden (RJB-CSIC), founded in the 18th century, is located in the center of Madrid, on the so-called “cultural golden mile” that makes up the Prado-Recoletos axis. With an area of 8 hectares, it houses and exhibits an important collection of more than 5,600 species of live plants located in the Garden and greenhouses, following scientific and landscape criteria. It also preserves an important historical-cultural heritage, which has led it to be part of the so-called Landscape of Light, on the Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro axis, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 25, 2021 in the city. Fuzhou China.

It is also a research center linked to the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). In 1942 it was declared a Historical-Artistic Garden and in 2005 it celebrated 250 years of history. Every year since 1755, it celebrates its anniversary on October 17.

In the guided tours offered by the Royal Botanical Garden on the occasion of this worldwide event, the history of the institution will be revealed in a tour of the Garden and its greenhouses. During visits, the public will acquire knowledge about the importance of botanical gardens as spaces of knowledge, preservation and conservation of plant and fungal resources.
