Persian ironwood

Parrotia persica (Real Jardín Botánico)

A tree with a fairly broad crown with branches that have marked black buds. The trunk of adult trees has a grey bark that peels off in sheets. The leaves are deciduous, elliptical, hanging, ovoid in shape, with wavy margins, dark green on the face and paler green on the underside. The flowers are small, golden yellow in colour, with scarlet antennae. The fruits are like small brown nuts that appear in clusters of between three and five pieces. This specimen has reached a height of thirteen metres with a crown diameter of twelve and a half metres and a trunk perimeter of ninety-five centimetres. It is estimated to be one hundred years old.
